African Year of Tourism


Botswana - stamp African Year of Tourism 1991The assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of African Unity proclaimed 1991 as African Year of Tourism during their session in Addis Ababa from 9 to 11 June 1990.


The idea came forth from the Conference of African Ministers of Tourism, convened in November 1989 under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission for Africa.


The OAU, ECA and the World Tourism Organization joined to make this year a success.


A number of African countries issued stamps showing their tourist attractions.
